Flower Basket Fundraiser!

The Junior rowers typically run a flower basket fundraiser each spring. In past year’s we have fuchsia and summer annual hanging baskets for sale. The baskets are produced by Henry’s Nursery in Everett. These baskets retail for at least $55 at fine garden centers such as Wells-Medina and Swanson’s. We’re selling 12″ premium fuchsia hanging baskets for $34 and 12″ full sun mixed annual baskets or 12” shade mixed annual baskets for $36. We are not able to provide a choice on the variety of fuchsia. We will receive a mix of colors & cannot guarantee which will be delivered. In general, fuchsias come in pink, purple & white combinations. As in past years, $10 from each basket can be applied directly to the Junior rowers account to be used toward future class, travel or regatta expenses or to the New Boathouse Fund. If you are a Masters rower, we invite you to join us this year in selling flower baskets. What you should do now (Spring 2012): [more...]

Wood You Believe…

We have wood framing for the first floor going in today! The roof is more than three quarters of the way complete and should be finished by the end of tomorrow. Now, framers are beginning to build the exterior walls and preparing to install doors and windows. It is incredible to watch the growth each day. I can hardly believe that the pile of steel from a month ago is now a massive, nearly covered structure.

It doesn’t take much imagination to envision the finished building now. Looking towards the three bay door openings currently is my favorite view.

Just imagine us being able to fit all of our boats inside. That’s right, no more outdoor boats. By adding a third bay on we have increased our storage capacity enough to protect all of our shells and equipment. After the winter we have had and the damage our poor outdoor boats sustained getting everything inside is a top priority.

The next step in the process will be to design boat racks that will accommodate our 47 club shells plus all of the private boats. Kelly, our Boathouse Manager, and Courtney, our Program Manager, are working in conjunction with our construction committee on the layout of the custom racks. The capital campaign committee continues to reach out to local businesses and individuals to finish raising the funds necessary to complete the bottom floor. Knock on wood; we will get there by the end of June!

The other huge news of the week is that we have FINISHED the mitigation planting. Our final volunteer planters cut another 800 stakes and got them all in the ground. Now the clock begins to keep everything maintained and alive for the next five years. We will still need help with that maintenance so if you are interested in being involved don’t hesitate to email: director

That’s the buzz for now!

Have No Fear!

Have no fear-the wild weather of the past week hasn’t washed away our new boathouse yet! Despite the rain, wind, snow, hail and sun our crew has been out there each day working hard to finish the metal structure. They are down to just a few remaining pieces left to solidify the frame. The outline of our deck which faces towards the Sammamish River is now done and I had the chance to head up in the lift and take some shots from that vantage point. While I was up there I snapped a few pictures of the incredible acres of mitigation we have completed with the help of our partners at King County. It’s amazing to think that all of that was blackberry brambles and weeds just a year ago. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered over the past several years. Rowers will tell you that teamwork is essential both on and off the water and it has taken a huge team of volunteers to get us to this milestone. We have just 500 stakes left from the nearly 8,000 plants that needed to get in the ground and we have just one more planting to get that finished. Our FINAL planting will take place on Saturday, March 24th from 10am-1pm. We would love to see a huge SRA crowd of volunteers to help us complete and then celebrate this awesome project. Grab your boots and gardening gloves and join us for an hour or two of fun in the mud! Hey, while you are there we can take you on a tour of the new boathouse. It won’t be long now and we will have our weather tight building… and after a wet and cold week like this, that day can’t come soon enough! [more...]

SRA is Living Social!

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream. After you take the three-hour Row For A Day sampler class for $20 (regularly $42) at Sammamish Rowing Association, your singing skills might not improve, but your boating abilities will make for some smooth sailing. If you’d like to do more than just get your feet wet, pay $49 for one month of adult Learn to Row classes (a $100 value). Once you learn the difference between port and starboard in these nearly two-hour sessions, you’ll soak in some basic boat maneuvering skills while gliding through serene nature and enjoying all the beauty the Pacific Northwest has to offer. There are several classes throughout the day, so you won’t need to break off your morning affair with the snooze button to attend. We think you’ll agree this oarsome deal hits just the right note. Purchase your Living Social deal here! [more...]

Here’s The Dirt!

You want the dirt on the new boathouse? We’ve got it right here for you and I do quite literally mean we’ve got dirt…piles and piles of dirt. This week has been all about grading out our path so that it is level with the new boathouse. Backhoes and dump trucks have been hauling dirt from our current path to level it and make it easier to carry boats down to the water once we move in to the new boathouse. Had this not been done, rowers would have had to carry boats up a hill and then down to get to the water. Now it is smooth sailing all the way. For those of you who use our path on a weekly basis be prepared to have a narrower entrance and some extra dirt piles to step over on your way down. These should all be moved within the week. Our construction crew also continued to do the finishing work on the metal frame of the building which is expected to be completed by the middle of next week. The next big step will be putting a roof over our heads! As always, please be careful if you head down to the boathouse. With more and more big machinery and workers it is important that everyone be extra diligent about staying out of the way and keeping an eye on your fellow rowers to prevent any accidents. That’s the “scoop” for this week! [more...]

New Boathouse Progress

As you can see from the pictures, our new boathouse is really beginning to take shape. The crew arrives around 7:30am each morning and the heavy lifting begins. All day long a cacophony of beeps, bangs, clangs and trucks provide the soundtrack to our boathouse. Each day brings us a few beams closer New Boathouse! We are in the final stages of negotiating our mechanical, electrics and plumbing (MEP in construction lingo.) The only thing we need to complete that portion is now the funding. MEP completion is required in order to obtain our temporary occupancy permit allowing us to move boats in. We are just $200,000 shy and need your support now more than ever. If you would like to make a donation please follow the link below. We appreciate your continued support and dedication to making our dream of a safe, reliable and permanent home for SRA a reality. SPECIAL DELIVERY!

Two huge trucks laden with materials for the new boathouse rumbled down the path this morning, and the unloading crew quickly got to work. Four hours later, the job was done. The parts and pieces for our new boathouse structure were signed, sealed and delivered today! Boathouse Arriving Our amazing community of rowers, donors and volunteers got us to this stage. Generous people within our SRA community have already raised $1.5 million for the new boathouse project. Those vital early dollars paid for:

  • design and engineering work
  • permitting
  • building site preparation
  • wetland mitigation
  • path and parking lot improvements
  • the turn lane
  • the foundation
  • materials for the building

Completing the project will cost another $1.5 million, so we’re already halfway there. Thank you for getting us this far. [more...]
